C215: Colorful Memories at Signal Gallery London

Juli 20th, 2010 · Home

C215 has made a name for himself internationally as a street artist, second to none. For the past 5 years, he has been taking himself across the world, to major cities and small towns and ‘decorating’ their street walls with his own special brand of beautiful and intricate stencil artwork. His approach has always been to get involved with the street and get the inhabitants to enjoy and appreciate his contribution to their environment. Sometimes he achieves this by producing portraits of local people or even local cats. His reputation is such that he frequently gets invited back to work in places he has visited, at times funded to work there by local councils or businesses.

Most recently, he has formed a tremendous relationship in his hometown of Vitry, in Paris, where he has been encouraged to work on the street and to invite international street artists of his choice, to do so also. The resulting riot of street art in a humble suburb has been a major achievement for him.

Over the past three years, C215 has been developing his work inside galleries. Mostly this artwork has reflected his work on the street – imaginatively transferring to wood and canvas his portraits that have become so loved outside. The response from buyers has been excellent and he has shown all over Europe and the US. Recently there has been a major retrospective of his work in Milan, which was marvelously received, showing the range, power and variety of images he has produced over the past five years.

‘Midnight Dreams’ will be C215’s second solo show at Signal Gallery London. In the show, the artist is moving away from reproducing works whose origins are on the street. He is developing a style that has more fantasy and independent imaginative force. Inspired by colourful memories from his childhood in Orleans, the work that will be shown will retain the fabulous use of intricate stencil work, with a freshness, lightness of touch and brilliant use of colour, that has not been appropriate in his street work to date. The artist has produced a dazzling new body of work that is sure to impress his fans and is bound to gain him new admirers.

Melissa Haslam, Morgan Slade and J. Shea at LeBasse Projects

Juli 15th, 2010 · Home

Hey fellas,

LeBasse Projects is opening three distinct exhibitions on one evening at July 17th.

In Gallery I Melissa Haslam from Australia will present her solo show ʻBotanicaʼ. Haslam has based her recent paintings on the relationship between humans and the natural world. Specifically focused on interrupted cycles of life, her figures surrender to nature and allow themselves to be overtaken by the wild and lush landscape that the artist so beautifully creates. In ʻBotanica,ʼ Haslam continues to explore her fascination between the idea of femininity and nature. As flowers and roots take over the canvas, her figures react as reminders of our symbiotic relationship with nature. Her female characters take on animal characteristics – sometimes playing aggressively and other times placid. In the animal world this kind of playfulness becomes preparation for the violence that is needed for survival, a primitive state of existence that is present in human nature but disguised by civilization.

ʻSavage Justice,ʼ a solo exhibition by Morgan Slade will be shown in Gallery II. Slade creates one of a kind mixed media paintings. Altering his own digital photographs of scantily clad women with paint, pen, pencil and collage he transforms straightforward images to chaotic madness. His pieces prey on primitive natural instincts with a youthful aesthetic appeal and bright, vibrant colors. By defacing exceptionally attractive people, Slade aesthetically changes his figures to appear flawed in some manner. He creates visual metaphors of consumerism, advertising and technology by inventing his own symbols or by appropriating familiar icons. For ʻSavage Justiceʼ Slade goes one step further by collaborating with iconic designer Betsey Johnson. This exhibition was shot on location in the Betsey Johnson flagship store in Los Angeles utilizing clothing and models from Johnsonʼs own line.

In the Project Room, Portland based J. Shea will exhibit ʻLife Formʼ  - a series of sculptural work combining clay and mixed media. Sheaʼs narratives are filled with visions of life, love, fear, and hope that are influenced by folk art, assemblage & street art.

It´s not to be missed!

Mittenimwald & Dash3Ultra – “Quantomirokaze” at ATM Berlin

Juli 6th, 2010 · Home

Mittenimwald and Dash3Ultra are two urban artists from Hamburg connected by their devotion for stencil paintings. While their themes and motifs are quite contrastive, the two are probably among the most interesting artists in a highly active hanseatic street art scene.

Dash3Ulstra is one of the heads of the first Hamburg Stencil Crew, ASA (Altona Stencil Artists), and enjoys great popularity along the Elbe for his series of anti-heroes. Stylistically, Dash2Ultra’s quirky pixel technique sticks out from the crowd. Content wise, his works revoke any dimunitives: Dash3Ultra devotes himself to the anti-hero; people who won notoriety through their unintentional involvement in the world’s darkest moments. For instance, Dash3Ultra portrays the pilot who dropped the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, or the man who provided the US administration with a reason to start the war on Iraq in 2003.

Mittenimwald, who originally followed a career in advertising, often draws on classic advertising methods in creating his stencilled paste-ups. He intertwines them with punk and tattoo elements to create a peculiar mix of sex sells and revolutionary practices. Mittenimwald’s motif selection ranges from a poster campaign about poverty, hunger and mettwurst to metal-tattooed urban beauties and skull-trimmed pop art icons. Commerce meets anarchy, punk meets advertising – Mittenimwald’s urban image world appears to be the artistic antithesis to the guerrilla marketing of the advertising industry. By means of quotations from the punk scene, Mittenimwald’s works seem to point out that each revolution will absorb its offspring: sell out or realness is a matter of perspective, but in the end it’s all about fun in this great rock’n’roll swindle!

Thinkspace welcomes Yosuke Ueno & Dan-ah Kim in Los Angeles

Juli 6th, 2010 · Home

Thinkspace presents Negative Never Again, an exhibition of new works from Japan based artist Yosuke Ueno, in what will be his debut solo exhibition with Thinkspace following numerous group show appearances. This will be Ueno’s first solo show in the United States in almost five years.

Also showing concurrently in their project room will be Waking In the Dark, an exhibition of new works from New York based artist Dan-ah Kim, in what will be her second solo exhibition with Thinkspace following a residency at the Can Serrat International Art Centre in El Bruc, Spain where the majority of this exhibition was created.

Yosuke Ueno creates illusory landscapes rife with icons both puzzling and perfect. He’s something of a cartographer, scientist and child all rolled into one. He’s an exclamation point splattered in paint, the person underneath the tablecloth at a boring party, weaving himself a story. His universe is a refreshing dose of positive elements and colossal hope he’d like to share with the entire world.

Ueno’s world is a menagerie of symbolism. Skulls, swans, elephants and scissors, they all pop out in peculiar places much like an image would in a hidden picture game. The difference is that these images stand for something precise. They too speak a language of innocence. With this show Ueno aims to further expand his world and visual vocabulary with some of his largest paintings to date and the addition of new sculptural works.

Artist Dan-ah Kim was recently rewarded a support stipend and completed an artist residency at Can Serrat International Art Centre in El Bruc, Spain. There she developed her new body of work, before traveling alone for several weeks and finding the overwhelming experiences necessary to finish the show. After years of battling with the elusiveness of sleep, this body of work came from many nights of waking in the dark. Dreams interrupted and peace ruined, in these hours there are always curiosities to stew, private demons to admit, and fears to command. As with Kim’s past work, the characters here chase liberty, explore relationships with each other, and with the natural worlds. In this series however, they also seek uncertainty, from a need to face nightly unrest and survive. The majority of Kim’s work is mixed media, beginning with drawing and painting then layered with various papers and hand sewn elements. Through these overlapping textures the artist hopes to enrich the experience of viewing the story.

Coming up this Thursday at Factory Fresh NYC: Among Darkened Woods

Juli 6th, 2010 · Home

Opening Reception July 8th from 7-10pm, preview at 6pm

Appropriating an image from the opening lines of Dante’s Inferno as visual and thematic
source material for the exhibit, the artists in Among Darkened Woods present works that seek
to represent the derivative potential of darkness, to probe the obscure, to lend plasticity to
shadows and other forms evanescent, to perceive presences and apparitions in that which
seems to have disappeared.

While Dante’s infernal quest leads him from the selva oscura of life’s proper path gone astray,
as it were, to visions of the most profound reaches of physical suffering, punishment and
ceaseless decay, the works here suggest an earlier stopping point, a less hellish locus, a
place perhaps only subtly subterranean where forms have not yet dropped into the abyss of
a falling apart, evoking instead the ordered calm of a falling away.

Featuring paintings, drawings, sculptures and mixed-media works by Tim Kent, SHM Kim, Adam Collison, Amanda Nedham, Mary Kate Maher, Monika Zarzeczna and Paul D’Agostino, and featuring an essay accompaniment by Paul D’Agostino.
