Clemens Behr realizes a process orientated installation at Rojo Barcelona

März 8th, 2010 · Home

Clemens Behr, german artist born in 1985 mainly works with cardboard, tape and found wood. His recent work focuses on the transformation of a given space by building paper installations, which seem to take over the place they have been spontaneously build in. Through simple geometric shapes, the visitor experiences casual confusions of 2D painted and 3D existing objects. With an easy folding technique, Behr quickly processes paper and fills the space with origami-like sculptures, all made out of material which originally was made for other, everyday purposes.

For the show “Black White Everything”, he will do an “cut during assembly”  installation for the  Rojo Art Space Barcelona. Using the existing colors of the galleries visual appearance,  black walls, white light, wooden ground  and a red grid, he decided only to work with this colours, wood and everything else related he can find during his stay in Barcelona. The fact of not being sure what exactly there will be to work with, to Behr, always is as exiting as realizing the spontaneous, process orientated installation.

Alongside the Installation he will exhibit current prints, illustrations and a film about his installations in the streets of Barcelona.

“For Action´s Sake”

März 8th, 2010 · Home

The first year anniversary show of Manipulated Image, “For Action’s Sake”, considers the confluence of art and politics. Direct and indirect references are made to the role of mass media in the present, and its relationship to Machiavellian and Fascistic politics. “For Action’s Sake” refers to fetishizing the idea of action-taking, to the point that the focus is on the action itself, rather than the meaning behind it.

Thinkspace presents Armsrock, Imminent Disaster & Tran Nguyen

März 5th, 2010 · Home

Before Thinkspace will relocate to Culver City this April they´ll celebrate one last time their location at Silver Lake. From March 12th – April 2nd 2010 they present fresh artwork with a sence of political statement from Armsrock and Imminent Disaster at the main gallery as well as from Tran Ngyuen at the project room.

Armsrock – Gaza – Ink on paper – 9×12 – 2009

Thinkspace welcomes Denmark based artist Armsrock along with New York City based artist Imminent Disaster to the gallery for Refuge, their first two-man show together. Refuge is the forced necessity of societies in collapse. The idea of Refuge grounded in the local presence of tent cities in Southern California will be the basis of the upcoming collaborative installation between Armsrock and Imminent Disaster. This exhibition will illustrate the fragile and temporary nature of any refuge and the collaborative installation between the two artists will be an allegory of sorts illustrating how we are all stuck in the same boat, which seems to be sinking.

Armsrock is an urban-artist and activist who, for the last several years, has been working with the human condition in the urban environment. He has been working with the medium of drawing in various ways to explore and comment on the city and the society that’s housed within it. He has been trying to question the role of art and artist in society by making art that is ephemeral, for free and for everybody. By creating hundreds of unique drawings of his fellow citizens, and placing these original pieces on the walls of the city, in an attempt to generate a critical understanding of the stories and fates that houses around and in all of us, he hopes to send a signal or raise a question about the details and mechanisms of our society.

Imminent Disaster – “Crossing The River” close up image – papercut – 2010

Imminent Disaster is an emerging Brooklyn-based artist creating in a variety of mediums including wheat pasted prints pulled from linoleum block cuts, hand-cut paper work, silk screening, collage and assemblage. Disaster is inspired by the street as an environment: a place with people, structures and history that are constantly being destroyed and rebuilt. Combining carefully researched fact and legend, she creates figurative images and historically inspired broadsides that are glimpses of a world that has fallen through the cracks of time.

Tran Ngyuen – “What The World Doesn´t Know” – 12×16 – 2010 – Mixed media on paper

“Human distress and weariness of the soul are prevalent illnesses we’ve all encountered in our existence. It is ubiquitous to say that life is hard and it’s even harder to relieve ourselves of this chronic disquiet. It is my hope that the milieus portrayed in Nurturing the Uneased Soul pay homage to those who are facing everyday-life difficulties – you, your family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, or even strangers.” - Tran Nguyen is a Vietnamese artist specializing in fantastical and surrealistic imagery. Tran is fascinated with creating imagery that can be used as a psycho-therapeutic support vehicle. Currently based in Savannah, Georgia, she enjoys the aesthetics of nature and the outdoors which is often incorporated into her work. She is currently enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design where she will graduate with a B.F.A in illustration in the year ahead.

Artistically their paths have moved in different directions, even though there aesthetic values have remained very much on the same track.

While Matt Small has found himself in the fortunate position of being wholeheartedly adopted by the Urban Art scene and has become one of the leading UK painters on that scene Zac Walsh´s work is more inclined towards photorealism.
