They have just returned from their latest exhibition in New York and are now looking forward to work and exhibit in their home town again, after a tour that took them to Philadelphia, London, Paris and Zurich.

Their specialty are collages and silkscreen prints: VARIOUS & GOULD’s creations concentrate on radiant colours and ambigious themes. Playfully, but poignantly, the duo deal with current and pressing topics such as migration, identity or the global credit crunch.

RETNA & El Mac teamed up again for “Of Our Youth” mural in Culver City

August 25th, 2010 · Home

I don´t need to introduce you to RETNA and El Mac since both of them are living legends. But i got news for you: They teamed up for another mural called “Of Our Youth” in Culver City, Los Angeles. RETNA and El Mac got inspired for the mural by meeting up with a men named Ralph Woodruff aka Chato at Skid Row while painting their previous mural. Because of the past hardships, experiences, the overall outlook on life and Woodruff´s ability to recognize past mistakes, which resonated with RETNA and his life, they dedicated their new mural to him. The text which reads, “So today I’m trying to change a few things to rectify the situation of my past. So today I’m looking towards the future (of our youth highlighted)” is a quote taken from their conversation.

Below you can watch the film they made of their work as well as see some picture – highlights.

London; 03/09/10: Gabriel Dubois arrives at StolenSpace with ‘KYKKELIKY’

August 25th, 2010 · Home

The fusion of both old and new, rural and urban can be seen in the abstract work of Gabriel Dubois. Elements which can be explained by influences from his background. Growing up in Van, Canada and spending a lot of time in his father’s painting studio, while also being fascinated in particular by his neighbourhood of Chinatown. During his childhood and teenage years he was fascinated with hand painted signs and in general with what he calls “the leftovers of the East Side”; added to that his years of skateboarding, his involvement with graffiti, Dubois had an interesting mix of influences from early on. Once he moved on and started to travel the world in places like Sri Lanka, India and Japan he started to also become interested in the visual language of these environs, further informing his vast well of inspiration.

The works themselves indirectly mirror these references. The painted ground is layered with bursts of expression covered over with delicately articulated lines and a keen sense of colour. At times there are clippings out of old magazines, applied directly onto the wooden panels and incorporated back into the ground of the painting, thereby juxtaposing photographic imagery within layers of organic expression. The use of collage and paint application bring forth a certain form of disjunction; the images having been extracted out of their historical and contextual bindings of print thereby subtly referencing their own representation, the cultural moment they contain and the reproduction of it.

In this recent selection of paintings his distinct visual language of energised signifiers and symbols are delivered with delicately articulated lines that wrap, weave and totem themselves through and around colour-coded compositions emitting a fresh momentum. These synthesized seeds are fertilized amongst bright bursts of expression & delicately assembled collage which are planted by chance & grow autonomously through a constructive/ deconstructive process. finally they are fabricated & refined in an accurate mechanical order.

For his debut solo show at StolenSpace, Gabriel Dubois has been preparing a new body of work since arriving in the East of London last September. Realizing there was no shortage of materials to be found in his new environment, Gabriel has continued working on his surface of choice, salvaged wooden panels. Along with works on paper he will also be creating a street sourced installation as well as an edition of limited screen prints.

Gabriel will also be in attendance at the gallery on Saturday 18th September between 1 and 4pm to answer any questions and to chat about his work.

Signal Gallery London presents ‘Beyond Punk’ – A Homage to the ’lost’ generation.

August 10th, 2010 · Home

Hey fellas,

this upcoming show is something big!

Signal Gallery presents ‘Beyond Punk’ featuring the artwork of punk musicians, artists associated with punk bands and artistic friends of punk. The legendary bassist from The Adverts, Gaye Advert, curates the exhibition, which will gather together a fantastic collection of ‘hell raising’ talent.

From the outset, the punk movement was about more than just music. The punk ‘look’ was as vibrant and ‘shocking’. Many punk musicians started their creative lives as visual artists who, one day, found themselves playing a guitar, bashing a drum or shouting into a microphone and before they knew it, they had recording contracts and gigs booked well into the future. The result of this musical success was that their artwork took a back seat. Over time, many of these musicians have returned to their creative roots and started producing artworks again. This rich wellspring of visual talent will be the centerpiece of the ‘Beyond Punk’ exhibition.

The line up speaks for itself: Adam Ant (Adam & the Ants), Charlie Harper (UK Subs), Chris Brief (The Briefs), Dale Grimshaw, Dee Generate (Eater), Gaye Black (Adverts), Gee Vaucher (Crass), Guy Denning, Jamie Reid (Sex Pistols), Knox (Vibrators), Nick Taggart (Zkrr Zkretna), Philip Barker (Buzzcocks), Poly Styrene (X Ray Spex), Shanne Bradley (Nipple Erectors), Shepard Fairey, Spizz (Spizzenergi), Steve Ignorant (Crass), Viv Albertine (The Slits) and Youth (Killing Joke).

‘Beyond Punk’ will reflect the richly varied inventive world that has grown up around the punk movement over the past thirty-five years. In an age when the young find it increasingly hard to achieve new ways to shock their elders, nostalgia for the simple but effective ‘fuck off’ of punk is very strong. Those musicians and artists involved in the movement are being recognized as the last ’lost’ generation.

Private View: 12th August 2010, 6 – 9pm
Open to the public: 13th – 21st August 2010, Tuesday – Saturday 12 – 6pm
